Report on the state of the Kimble Churches
All Saints', Little Kimble
The church is now generally in a good state of repair
having been re-roofed.
For the last eight and a half years we have been trying
to start work on the conservation of the valuable wall paintings; this work is
urgent because we are told by the experts that the condition of the paintings
is deteriorating. Work cannot start until we have the agreement of English
Heritage, the Council for the Care of Churches and the Diocese of Oxford as to
exactly what is to be done. We are pressing hard for this agreement. Once we
have this, it will be possible to estimate the cost and to go out to tender.
St Nicholas, Great Kimble
Following seven thefts of lead from the roof of the
church, we have now installed a sophisticated security system, for which The
Friends have paid.
We have an agreed specification for repairing the roof
using partly lead and partly another material, but we do not yet have a firm
figure for the cost of repair. It is probable that our insurers will cover a
considerable part of the cost.
The state of the drainage at St Nicholas gives cause for
concern and damage is being caused to the interior of the church, notably to
the floor. The cost of repair is likely to be considerable and will probably
have to be met by The Friends. Plans are being made for the repairs but it will
not be possible to start work until we have a clear idea of how much the
conservation of the wall paintings at All Saints' is going to cost us.
Forthcoming Event
It is planned to hold a Cheese and Wine Party at All
Saints on Saturday, 31st October from 12 pm to 3 pm.
