Ridgeway passed along the top of the Chilterns. above the village

In the Late IRON
AGE extensive earthworks existed and the village got its name from Kimbeline (also known as Cymbeline or Cunobelin) - ancient
king of Britain.

In ROMAN
TIMES the area was conquered - local tradition says that King Cogidubnus
was killed near here. The Roman
Icknield Way passed through the village. A villa
was built at Little Kimble.

|
In NORMAN TIMES (1085 ) THE
DOMESDAY BOOK records the details of the village - the manor belonged to the
GIFFARD family

1227
|
In the MIDDLE AGES
HENRY OF WENDOVER became the first vicar. The church and manor belonged
to the ABBEY OF MISSENDEN.

|
In TUDOR TIMES
the church and village passed to the Dormer family. then to the
HAMPDENS.

|
In 1637 JOHN
HAMPDEN refused to pay 20 shillings in Ship Money. In a meeting in the church,
because King Charles I had not got parliamentary agreement to levy the tax. In
the CIVIL WAR Hampden died in Thame from wounds received at the Battle of
Chalgrove.

1803
|
In 1803 the
village was enclosed - but allotments were left to compensate the poor. The
manor passed to SCROPE BERNARD
|

19th Century
|
In VICTORIAN TIMES
great changes occurred - a BAPTIST CHURCH was set up - the
SCHOOL was built (1851 - but the foundation is older) - the RAILWAY came (1861) -
and the church was extensively rebuilt (1876 - 1881) . Apart from a few pieces
high in the “ east “ window all the glass is Victorian or modem.
